The world is made of widescreen Apr. 14th, 2009 @ 12:20 am
I haven't posted in a while. I'm doing that now because I feel like ranting.

Is there a secret society out there which controls the world and decide that everything must be in widescreen format? I have no idea. Or maybe the governments decided one day that everybody can't sell 4:3 TVs and forgot to notify me.

Because in what I'm seeing today, computer monitors and LCD tvs are all in freaking widescreen. I originally thought of getting an 19" LCD tv with VGA support at 4:3 ratio (so I can use it for computer & console gaems), but the result I get is: Zero. Especially over here where you must go with the flow.

The funny thing is that over at Hong Kong, aside from the HDtv things and DVDs, they're all in 4:3 ratio, even the cable tv service we have. At our house there's a 16:9 LCD tv. And either we have to stretch it to fit the full screen, or change it to a 4:3 aspect ratio and not use the sides of the TV. Wait what? I didn't buy a TV to see things stretched out or have very visible black section on both ends of the screen!

I'm so used to the 1024 x 768 resolution that when my dad bought a widescreen laptop (widescreen laptops to me are very, very evil), the laptop feels weird. Icons are bigger, there's lots more empty spaces on the desktop (it reminds me of 800 x 600 but with a wider desktop). Then browsing the net gives me lots of empty spaces (see LCD tv) or pages stretched out so much that it looks really weird. Even websites are made in 4:3 aspect ratio in mind.

Heck, my company's computers are all in 4:3 ratio and they're replaced like half a year ago (before that they were freaking CRT monitors, which are good for putting random stuff on them). I don't think I can accept widescreen LCDs in my life. Maybe when my workplace computers become widescreen. That'd be probably 3 years from now and I'd stop advancing technologically (I consider 35 years old as the cutoff age for accepting new technologies, but I'm showing signs of having this earlier).

Add that to the fact that people who like widescreen thinks that 4:3 aspect users are old prehistoric fossils who can't evolve and doesn't "get on with the times." Maybe they're like chosen for widescreen by the higherups. Or maybe it's a new religion - then call me an atheist.

I has a new cellpwn Jan. 15th, 2009 @ 09:16 pm
So I haven't posted in my LJ for maybe half a year. In short, I'm still happy that I'm still surviving despite the economic downturn.

Anyway...if you bother reading about what I write, remember this where I said like "I hope to use the phone for 2 more years?" Of course it then died on me and I switched afterwards. That was because it died on me.

I've been using the Sony Ericsson Z550i until now. Then I saw a new cellpwn.

Its name is the Sony Ericsson Z770i. And yes, it's also a clamshell (it's now a staple of mine).

Here's how my old one looks (Z550i):

Here's how my new one looks (Z770i):

ITSH BEAUTIFUL

It's also a 3G pwn that can also read RSS, access Google map, send and receive e-mails and has all the fancy features except for that camera talking thingy you see on other 3G pwns.

In addition to that, I have a 2G card.

So......it's like a normal cellpwn for me. Which I don't mind. Even though it is made of win and awsum, it's a little on the slow side, and the buttons aren't great as you can't really feel them out.

It's also not sold in HK thru normal means, and is an imported phone (sold at import stores obviously). There's warranty (from the store) but you aren't probably going to be taking the pwn to Sony and expect them to fix for you.

The other sad thing is that my older cellpwn is working fine (battery starts to drop its lifebar however) and I switched the phone. That's not something my old self would do. Maybe that's not the best thing in retrospect, and this new one is more of an impulse buy, so hopefully I won't regret it down the road.

Free stuff makes me pay moar Oct. 16th, 2008 @ 01:05 am
So I was bored one day and asked SS on the chat on what games are interesting lately. He said there's nothing really noteworthy lately, but told me that iRO opened up a free server with 100% drop rate.

I only took note by then, and commented to SS that I can't seem to access the iRO website. So I was liek, hey maybe the server's on maintenance.

But almost every day I try to access the iRO website to no avail, it turns out that they've done some fun IP banning of anywhere not in their jurisdiction. By then I was getting nuts because 1. I'm too bored and 2. The grip of RO is slowly getting back to me.

So I actually went to an anonymous proxy website and browsed through their pages to find a download link. To make a long story short, I got the client but it wouldn't connect!

So I was liek, fark dis I'm...

...going to play on the Taiwan/HK free server.

And so I started my RO life there. But it's as if the host (Gameflier) doesn't want you to connect, they have an overly complex security system where you have your own password for the Gameflier account, then an additional account and password for RO, and then a keypad thingy for double verification on Gameflier, and then you need to register at least 1 phone number.

What's the phone # for? Every time you start playing RO, you need to give them a call with your registered phone #. Then you login immediately after it rang once (the line automatically cuts off afterwards).

But that's not just it, another keypad thingy appears in-game for an additional set of password for you to enter. Once that's correct, you can play now.

And did I mention that accessing the storage needs yet another keypad thingy password? This free server is also a severely nerfed one too. You get 50% exp rate, and no fly and b-wings, and if you die, you get a 30% chance of dropping something that you're holding (or wearing, I forgot).

But I kept playing. Kept playing until my novice was lvlbuzting in Culverts finding that killing cockroaches for 1% exp isn't fun. I should've switched classes already (if exp is normal).

So alluvasudden I bought a points card to get on a paid server, today.

RO, I blame you for making me play you again. D:
(SS also gets partial credit)

DIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE

So it's anxiety? Aug. 24th, 2008 @ 01:09 am
Whatever I said in my last post became so prominent the last half of the week, I eventually had to cut my working day short and visit the doctor, the dizziness became rather unbearable.

So basically I went to a nearby doctor's office by my home and he talked to me and asked me questions (including asking me if I have sisters/brothers). By the end of the diagnosis, he also asked me to do a squat into a standstill quickly to see how I feel.

And his answer to whatever that's going through me is that:
1. Anxiety is partially causing these symptoms (one which included before was shortness of breath). This is most likely caused by work pressure, he said.
2. I have okay blood pressure, but they're on the lower side.

The funny thing is that when he told me to do that squat-stand thingy, I said I felt a little dizzy. He said it's common to lower blood pressure people. He also mentioned that this kind of blood pressure is more closely associated to women, to which I had a hueg WTF inside my head.

Another thing he said is that my blood isn't circulating that good. When you look at your fingernails, the bottom part should have some 'white stuff' on it. He said that if you're healthy enough, all 5 fingers should have it. Currently, I have 3 fingers who have that on each of my hand. And he said the tip of the fingers should not look as pale too. That's a little Chinese medicine thingy that he's telling me but at least he's giving out useful info.

At the end he told me to eat sum vitamins (which he gave me two days' worth of dosage lol), along with Xanax, which helps in curing anxiety.

So yeah, at least I think this is helping. I do feel better now.

Maybe I really need to rest more Aug. 12th, 2008 @ 12:43 am
Recently I'm getting some degrees of dizziness, difficulty on focusing (both on my eyes and concentration), and a few headaches. It may be my glasses partially, since I've been wearing them for a few years, but I don't think that's the main reason. It's also as if I have a flu but the most prominent symptoms (coughing, fever etc) aren't apparent (yet).

I don't think my body is breaking down at this age though, but I think I should do a body check sometime soon. There may be hidden things that I don't know in my body. Last time I checked, the doctor said I'm perfectly normal, so based on that assumption at least what's happening this past half-year may be the culprit. And that is the lack of a healthy sleep.

Anyway, more sleep is in order. It's not like I'm going to die soon, but I think that I have some catching up to do.

20th Century Boys Aug. 12th, 2008 @ 12:34 am
I usually don't look forward to watching movies much but after reading the manga 20th Century Boys, there's something I'm going to look forward to.

The manga got a creepy streak all the way through, but it was a really really good read.

Me recently finishing the manga coincides with its live action movie, which is supposedly coming out later this month. You can find the official site here: http://www.20thboys.com

Your result for The Personality Defect Test...

Robot

You are 86% Rational, 0% Extroverted, 14% Brutal, and 0% Arrogant.

You are the Robot! You are characterized by your rationality. In fact, this is really ALL you are characterized by. Like a cold, heartless machine, you are so logical and unemotional that you scarcely seem human. For instance, you are very humble and don't bother thinking of your own interests, you are very gentle and lack emotion, and you are also very introverted and introspective. You may have noticed that these traits are just as applicable to your laptop as they are to a human being. You are not like the robots they show in the movies. Movie robots are make-believe, because they always get all personable and likeable after being struck by lightning, or they are cold, cruel killing machines. In all reality, though, you are much more boring than all that. Real robots just sit there, doing their stupid jobs, and doing little else. If you get struck by lightning, you won't develop a winning personality and heart of gold. (Robots don't have hearts, silly, and if they did, they would probably be made of steel, not gold.) You also won't be likely to terrorize humanity by becoming an ultra-violent killing machine sent into the past to kill the mother of a child who will lead a rebellion against machines, because that movie was dumb as hell, and because real robots don't kill--they horribly maim at best, and they don't even do that on purpose. Real robots are boringly kind and all too rarely try to kill people. In all my years, my laptop has only attacked me once, and that was only because my brother threw it at me. In short, your personality defect is that you don't really HAVE a personality. You are one of those annoying, super-logical people that never gets upset or flustered. Unless, of course, you short circuit. Or if someone throws a pie at you. Pies sure are delicious.

To put it less negatively:

1. You are more RATIONAL than intuitive.

2. You are more INTROVERTED than extroverted.

3. You are more GENTLE than brutal.

4. You are more HUMBLE than arrogant.

Compatibility:

Your exact opposite is the Class Clown.

Other personalities you would probably get along with are the Hand-Raiser, the Emo Kid, and the Haughty Intellectual.

If you scored near fifty percent for a certain trait (42%-58%), you could very well go either way. For example, someone with 42% Extroversion is slightly leaning towards being an introvert, but is close enough to being an extrovert to be classified that way as well. Below is a list of the other personality types so that you can determine which other possible categories you may fill if you scored near fifty percent for certain traits.

The other personality types:

The Emo Kid: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Starving Artist: Intuitive, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Bitch-Slap: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Brute: Intuitive, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hippie: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Televangelist: Intuitive, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Schoolyard Bully: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Class Clown: Intuitive, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Robot: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Haughty Intellectual: Rational, Introverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Spiteful Loner: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Sociopath: Rational, Introverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

The Hand-Raiser: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Humble.

The Braggart: Rational, Extroverted, Gentle, Arrogant.

The Capitalist Pig: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Humble.

The Smartass: Rational, Extroverted, Brutal, Arrogant.

Random snippets from random stuff Jul. 9th, 2008 @ 02:14 am
- Beat Squenix's "The World Ends With You." I like the style and its decidedly different tone on the surface (even though it's still mostly grindlvlbuzting). The only real complaint is that I don't really have two pairs of eyes that will look at what's happening on the top screen AND the bottom screen simultaneously. The answer is to screw what happened in the upper screen and keep pressing the same direction, or just let the CPU do it for you.
After beating the game there's an "Another Day" mode, but I haven't bothered much to finish the whole thing afterwards.

- FFTA2 has freaking judges and their laws again, and the pre-battle is clunky, the battle feels a little clunkier than before, and I'm still playing it. I miss the old FFT though.

- Boom Dizzle to Clippers (verbally). I'll just leave it at that cause whatever I said seems to jinx our chances.

- KOF 98UM OST has so many songs in there, but I have no idea which is which for the second disc. There's some classics obviously, but I don't know how to get those songs out in-game.

- Bought Diablo 2 and started playing again, online with SS (with an self-imposed online only character that can also be played offline lol). I also made a necromancer and them skeletons are fun.

- I need to sleep earlier. It feels like I only sleep for 5 hours on weekdays. Not enough obviously.

The Pyro update, I liek.

Regarding mapping progress it has slowed down to a halt. Mostly because I have no idea how to rework the ground floor of the tower (from being a lobby only to thinking about a front lobby with a warehouse at the back).

Maybe I'll just get lazy and kill off everyone when they fall off the tower instead.

RAGING STORM May. 30th, 2008 @ 12:49 am
Update on mapping: At least I got another part down.

Took me 3 days to experiment around with Hammer and get it right.

Basically, in the map Geese's Raging Storm shows up about a few moments after you capped the point. I tried to do the 'cage' but it has problems showing up, and saving (lose of polygons zomg). So I thought of something else instead, basically put, it's a bunch of spikey triangles thrown together making it look like a circle with spikes.

Next up will be lighting, which is always a major problem with my mapping skill.
